6. The Law of Cause and Effect

Everything we think, feel, say, and do, returns to us and shapes the reality we experience.

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life.

From thought to manifestation.

The Law of Cause and Effect concerns the events that take place in our lives. According to this law, there is no such thing as coincidence, and nothing can happen outside of universal laws. The law states that every cause creates an effect, and every effect originates from a cause. Everything we send out into the universe in thoughts, words, emotions, and actions returns to us and forms our reality as a consequence. Never as a punishment, for punishment is unknown to the Creator. Everything that happens in our lives arises from our thoughts and what we give our attention to. Karma is a word associated with this law, where the consequence can manifest in this life or a future one. These then are unfinished matters brought to us by our Higher Self. But again, never as a punishment or anything resembling it. The Law of Cause and Effect ensures that we can create our reality with our thoughts, words, emotions, and deeds. We have simply forgotten that we can do this, which is why we sometimes become victims of the consequences. The law gives us the opportunity to consciously be the creator of our own lives, in complete freedom. There is no judgment, only always a cause and an effect.

Everything is energy and moves in circles.
We are energy transmitters through our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions
What we send out, comes back to us.

W. Glaudemans writes the following about the Law of Cause and Effect:

The Law of Cause and Effect precisely forms the link here between the unmanifested and the manifested, where, thanks to the added energy of action, the unmanifested intention transitions into a manifested form. This law connects these two worlds. The cause is located in the realm of the unmanifested: the creative thought or intention that has brought all energy particles into coherent vibration from the field of potential, ready to be manifested. And the effect is located at the level of the manifested: the form in the world that is the result of the creation process. In other words, the cause lies in the creative mind outside of time, the effect in the material world of space and time.
(W. Glaudemans, 2015, p.127)

What you sow, you shall reap.

Our thoughts, words, emotions, and actions form the cause; the consequence is the mirror that our life shows us every day. Usually, we are not aware when we have an experience and don't understand why it's happening to us. Still, it is advisable to take ownership of this, otherwise, we might continue to blame others for problems in our lives. This is, of course, easier said than done, especially when we consider events in our lives that can be quite painful. Taking ownership means acknowledging that we are responsible for what happens in our lives, not out of guilt, but out of forgiveness. Life events are better understood when there is a clear linear causal relationship, but when an event occurs about which we ask ourselves: why me? it becomes complicated. We always have the option to decide how we react. That's how I see it, at least, although I still fall back on old ideas for the intense things in life, such as lashing out at others, anger, and frustration. Ultimately, I always come back to acceptance and being grateful for what I do have.

The following example helped me to understand the Law of Cause and Effect better: when we pick up a stone and deliberately throw it through the neighbours' window, it is likely that we will be held liable for it and subsequently have to pay for the damage. But what if we hurl different stones (thoughts, words, actions, emotions) into the universe and are presented with the bill ten years or even two lifetimes later? Who would understand what it was ultimately about then? Probably few people, but when we know that the Law of Cause and Effect is always at work, we realise that everything that happens in our lives is our own doing.

From reaction to creation.

With our thoughts today, we create the reality of tomorrow or next week. Once we have decided that we want to take responsibility for cause and effect, we can consciously (re)create both the cause side and the effect side. The first step could be to consciously pay attention to thoughts about what we do want (cause). We can even arrange moments in our lives for this, where we exclusively focus on what we do want. The second step could be that we decide not to react as we always did to everything we encounter in our lives (effect) and experience as undesirable. We decide to react in such a way that our ego may rebel. By consciously choosing a reaction with a higher vibrational frequency, there is no question of reaction here, but of re-creation. Words such as connection, respect, and unity will then take precedence. In such situations, we must also look at our emotions. At that moment, our emotions are the truth. Feelings of anger, rejection, and disappointment are there to be transformed into feelings of a higher vibrational frequency. These, in turn, lead to new thoughts, which in turn create new consequences. In this way, we can exert influence on both the cause and the effect.

Beliefs.

When we as creators consciously create with our thoughts, words, emotions and actions, we cannot escape being confronted with our deepest beliefs. A belief shows and makes us feel how we truly think about something and is always true for us, but also illusion. We adopted this belief as truth at a certain point in our lives, usually in our youth. In the context of “The Self,” every belief is a complete illusion. Yet, it can be difficult to see this belief for what it is. We cannot escape facing our beliefs. Then we have a choice: do we transform these beliefs or do we continue to live in illusion? The following text from A Course in Miracles shows us what a belief is.

We don't see the world as it is, we see the world as we are.
No more and no less. The world you perceive matters to you.
She is the reflection of your inner self, that you project onto the outside world.
The world is a reflection of your inner state of mind.
As you think, so you perceive. There is no point in wanting to change the world.
Choose to change how you see the world.
Perception is a consequence, not the cause.

Everything moves in fixed rhythms: up, down, and up again. These cycles inevitably bring highs and lows, but those who remain inwardly balanced soften the peaks and troughs and grow with the rhythm.”
